Mitral valve repair in patients with left ventricular dysfunction continues to be a subject of debate. A critical consideration when deciding about the procedure is that the patient will benefit in terms of improved quality of life and prognosis.
Proper indication requires identification of the etiology of mitral regurgitation and the cause of left ventricular dysfunction. Mitral valve surgery is designed to treat valve disease, myocardial disease, or heart failure in cases of organic mitral regurgitation, ischemic mitral regurgigation, or dilating cardiomyopathy, respectively.
